As Peak Hurricane Season Approaches - Hurricane Glass Manufacturers Under Scrutiny

MIAMI, Fla.- Florida residents are very aware of the dangers of hurricane season and the need to prepare to protect their families, property and businesses from damage. As potential storm Dean comes off the coast of Africa, many Floridians are wondering just how safe are their "hurricane resistant" windows and glass doors. Today's filing against Nebula Glass International (Glasslam and N.G.I.), Cardinal IG Company, and Jeld-Wen, Inc., seeks to get class certification from the court.

Suzanne Jones is just one of many consumers who put their trust in these companies to provide a safe product or be responsible once it discovered its products were subject to failure.

Jeld-Wen markets and sells hurricane-resistant windows and glass doors to Florida residents and businesses, which are manufactured with resins supplied by Glasslam and/or laminated glass by Cardinal. There are hundreds if not thousands of these products that are currently being used by consumers and businesses.

"Jeld-Wen, Cardinal, and Glasslam knew or should have known that the windows and doors, marketed as "hurricane-resistant" were not suitable for residential or commercial use, and were subject to failure," said Attorney Manuel Dobrinsky of FREIDIN · DOBRINSKY. "Although Jeld-Wen offered to provide replacement windows and doors to some of its customers, the individual customers are being held responsible for installing the replacement windows and doors. In many of these cases, installation runs into the tens of thousands of dollars."

The complaint filed today against Jeld-Wen, Cardinal, and Glasslam in Circuit Court in and for the Eleventh Judicial Circuit in and for Miami-Dade County claims breach of contract and breach of implied warranty issues.
